Nach dem Sieg der Franken über die Westgoten in der Schlacht von Vouillé im Jahr 507 und den anschließenden Gebietsverlusten der Westgoten gelangten die westgotischen Münzstätten in den Besitz der Franken, die die Prägung von Solidi im Namen des Anastasius fortsetzten. Bei diesen Solidi ist daher eine klare Trennung von westgotischen und fränkischen Prägungen nicht möglich (siehe dazu auch Reinhart S. 122 und Tf. VII)."

Sehr attraktives, vorzügliches Exemplar Bei dem auf der Münze geannten Prägeort ACAVNO handelt es sich um die Abtei Saint-Maurice d'Agaune im Schweizer Kanton Wallis, die als ältestes Kloster des Abendlandes gilt, das ohne Unterbrechung besteht (vgl. auch HMZ 1-93). Der Heilige Sigismund (gest. 523/24), Sohn des Burgunderkönigs Gundobat (gest. 516), gründete das dem Heiligen Mauritius und den Märtyrern der Thebäischen Legion geweihte Kloster im Jahre 515. Ihre Gebeine sollen um das Jahr 380 durch Bischof Theodor von Octodurus (Matigny) in die Höhlen am Fuss des Felsentores überführt worden sein, durch das die Rhône das Wallis verlässt. Bei dem in der Rückseitenumschrift etwas entstellt genannten Monetar könnte es sich um ROMANOS handeln. Der Name "romanus" (lat. Römer) ist als Eigenname sehr beliebt gewesen und gehört zu den häufigsten römischen Cognomen (Beinamen) mit geographischem Bezug (vgl. Felder, E.: Die Personennamen auf den merowingischen Münzen der Bibliothèque nationale de France, München 2003, S. 299)."

Brosi, Drei neu entdeckte Beischläge zu schweizerischen Münzen.Von diesem Beischlag gab bis anhin nur einen solchen Schilling von Maccagno, bei dem ein Heiliger Alodius in der Umschrift stand. Gianazza und andere Autoren konnten diesen Heiligen nicht ausfindig machen. Erst F. Luraschi konnte nachweisen, dass es sich beim hl. Alodius ebenfalls um denselben Namen wie Eligius handelt, denn aus dem französischsprachigen "Saint-Eloi" wurde im nordlombardischen Gebiet ein "Sant'Alò", den man dann lateinisiert in Alodius auf die Münze brachte (dieselbe Quelle S. 55-57). Eligius lebte von ca. 588 bis 660 und war ein bedeutender Goldschmied und Münzmeister unter dem merowingischen König Dagobert. Später wandte er sich geistlichem Leben zu, wurde Bischof von Noyen und Tournai und widmete sein Leben der Missionierung der nordfranzösischen Germanen. Der Legende nach soll Eligius zugesehen haben, wie ein Fremder einem Pferd, das widerspenstig war und sich nicht beschlagen liess, diesem das Bein ausriss, es neu mit Hufeisen versah und anschliessend das Bein wieder anheilte. Als Eligius diese Methode ebenfalls versuchte, gelang ihm das jedoch verständlicherweise nicht. Eligius erkannte deshalb im Fremden Gott den Schöpfer und begriff, dass ihm eine wichtige Lehre in Demut erteilt worden war. Der hl. Eligius wird deshalb bildlich oftmals mit dieser Szene dargestellt. Gleich mehrere Berufe, die sich mit Pferden, aber auch mit Gold und Münzen befassen, haben Eligius als Patron ausgewählt, so u.a. auch die Tierärzte, Hufschmiede, Goldschmiede und die Numismatiker. Übrigens existieren einige wenige merowingische Trienten, auf denen der Münzmeistername Eligius in der Umschrift vorkommt, ebenso viele Medaillen, bis in die moderne Zeit. Als neuzeitliche Münze existiert nach heutiger Erkenntnis nur dieser eine Schillingsbeischlag von Maccagno, der den Namen Eligius in der Umschrift trägt."

TB, flan légèrement fendu This solidus is exceptional for its rarity and type. The major reference works by Prou, Belfort, Grierson and more recently Depeyrot attribute it to King Childeric II and the Marseille mint, it is strongly struck but the legends are incomplete. Merovingian "Royal" solidi are very rare but this specimen is exceptionally rare because it is the only type in Merovingian coinage depicting a King under a portico. Does this exceptional religious scene represent Childeric's recognition of the church's authority, or, could it commemorate his new title of King of all the Franks attained during the brief period 673-675 when he succeeded in unifying the kingdoms of Neustria, Burgundia and Austrasia? Childeric II was the last Merovingian king to have attempted to exercise his authority, for after his assassination, the power shifted from the Merovigian Kings to Mayors of the Palace. Depeyrot lists 3 examples known but our research shows just 2 previously recorded, as the "Trésor de Bordeaux" specimen which was donated in 1804 to the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the specimen listed by Prou are the same. The second known example is the Ponton d'Amecourt specimen which is referenced in the Belfort and in the MEC-1. This second specimen was bequeathed recently in 2006, to the Fitzwilliam museum by Grierson, who had acquired it in a 1963 Vinchon sale for 17,000 French francs, the equivalent in value of three gold bars of 1 kilogram in 1963. Ce solidus est exceptionnel par sa rareté et par son type. Les ouvrages de référence dont Prou, Belfort, Grierson et plus récemment Depeyrot l'attribuent au roi Childéric II, pour l'atelier de Marseille. La frappe est forte mais des parties de légende sont incomplètes. Les solidi « royaux » mérovingiens sont très rares et ce type est encore plus rare car c'est le seul exemple dans le monnayage mérovingien représentant un roi sous un portique (ou dais). Cette scène religieuse exceptionnelle représenterait-elle la reconnaissance par Childéric de l'autorité de l'Eglise ? Pourrait-elle commémorer son nouveau titre de Roi de tous les Francs acquis pendant la brève période de 673-675, quand il réussit à unifier les royaumes de la Neustrie, de la Bourgogne et de l'Austrasie ? Childéric II est le dernier roi mérovingien à tenter d'exercer son autorité car, après son assassinat, le pouvoir passe définitivement des rois aux mains des maires du Palais. Depeyrot recense 3 exemplaires, mais nos recherches en dénombrent seulement 2, l'exemplaire du « Trésor de Bordeaux » donné en 1804 à la Bibliothèque nationale de France est celui répertorié par Prou. Le deuxième connu est celui de Ponton d'Amécourt qui est référencé dans le Belfort et dans le MEC-1 ; il a été légué en 2006 au Fitzwilliam Museum par Grierson, qui l'avait acquis dans une vente Vinchon de 1963 pour 17'000 francs français soit l'équivalent de 3 kilos d'or de l'époque."

Most have been found in graves, and were holed and worn on a necklace or bracelet, apparently as payment by the deceased to Charon to gain passage over the river Styx ('Charon's obol' or 'viaticum'). As noted in MEC, the exact purpose of these coins is uncertain, but there is anecdotal literary evidence that they were disbursements to the poor by the king. While some pieces bear good Latin legends, many are partially or completely degraded as on the present piece."

Bendall 116. 74.62g, 38mm, 9mm thick. An attractive circular commercial weight with a pleasing patina. Recessed top, two grooves around the edge. Engraved on this remarkable Jewish-Byzantine three-unciae official imperial weight, in the typical 'angular chisel' technique often favoured in this period, is with what Christians at the time would have considered a blasphemous image replacing the usual Christian Holy Cross. It was conceivably engraved at the time of the Byzantine-Sasanian War of 602-628 CE, when many disgruntled Jews sided against the Byzantines in the Jewish revolt against Heraclius, which successfully assisted the invading Persians led by Khosru II in conquering the Byzantine Empire's richest provinces in the Diocese of the East: Antioch in 611, Jerusalem in 614, Alexandria in 619 and the rest of Egypt by 621. Most of the Byzantine mints closed at this time, with the exception of that of the second city of the empire, Alexandria, which continued to produce imperial standard bronze coin denominations in the form of 12, 6, 3 and 1 nummi, without imperial titles, but with the characteristic Persian symbols of the sun and moon (cf. MIB 202, 211, 214 and 215). Another possible period for this Jewish-Byzantine weight might be after the death of Muhammad in 632 and the rise of the first Caliph Abu Bakr, who set in motion a military expansion that in a few short decades overwhelmed the whole the Levant, starting with the province of Syria in 634, the Exarchate of Africa in 686 and Visigothic Spain by 712-716. The new Islamic authorities in Syria, North Africa and Spain continued the Byzantine monetary system by issuing what we call Arab-Byzantine coins, until they were gradually replaced by the Umayyad Post-Reform coinage starting in 696/7 (77H) with its own well recorded weights and measures (cf. G. Bernardi, 'Umayyad Caliphate Globular Coins' in Arabic Gold Coins I, Trieste 2010, pp. 101-104 and S. Album, Checklist of Islamic Coins, Santa Rosa 2011, 115-124). These Muslim invaders were seen as a liberating force by the long suffering Jewish population within the Christian empire. Eager to aid the Arab invaders in administering the newly conquered territories many towns and garrisons were left in the hands of the Jews while the invaders proceeded further west and north. The destruction of the Second Temple by Titus in 70 CE and the subsequent triumphal procession in Rome was a momentous event celebrated by many coin issues over several years and the erection of a triumphal arch in the Forum. The renowned Arch of Titus depicts Roman soldiers carrying away the spoils of the Second Temple, in particular, the seven-branched menorah, or candelabrum. The menorah was then deposited in the temple of Pax, where it remained until it was looted by the Vandals in 455 and taken to their capital, Carthage. After the fall of Carthage in 533 to the Byzantine general Belisarius the menorah was removed to Constantinople and later sent to Jerusalem (Prociopius, Vandal Wars IV.9.5). There exists no record of it after this and it was probably destroyed when Jerusalem was sacked by the Sasanian Persians in 614, when the Holy Cross was carried off to Ctesiphon. After the destruction of Jerusalem at the end of the Bar Kokhba War in 135, the menorah had become the iconic symbol of the Jewish Diaspora and the festival of Sukkot. In a religiously tolerant pagan Roman Empire the menorah image was placed prominently on signet rings, lamps, and amulets and even appears in the roundels of prestigious Roman gold glass cups, along with other Jewish symbols. With Constantine I the empire became Christian, and under the Theodosian Code of 404 Jews were excluded from certain governmental posts and by 425 all public offices, both civilian and military - a prohibition that was repeated under the Justinian Code of 545. Although the Justinian Code remained in force in the Eastern Empire until the ninth century, the period following Justinian's reign was generally characterised by tolerance of non-Christians, particularly the Jews. However, the Jewish revolt against Heraclius provoked severe anti-Jewish measures to be enacted throughout the empire and applied as far away as Byzantine North Africa, Merovingian France and Visigothic Spain, the alleged provenance of this weight. The first Visigothic rulers of Spain were not much interested in the religious affairs of the kingdom until 506, when Alaric II (484507) published his Breviarium Alaricianum or Lex Romana Visigothorum, which adopted the laws Byzantium. Following the conversion of the Visigothic royal family under Recared from Arianism to Catholicism in 587, the situation became far worse for Jews, now subject to forced conversion, resulting in the utter embitterment and alienation of Spanish Catholic rule by the time of the Muslim invasion in 711. Under Muslim rule Jews experienced tolerance and integration and given the status of dhimmi, by which they remained second class citizens, but were accorded many rights and protections as a "people of the book'."

N ANASTA | SIVS PP AVC, diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed facing bust, holding spear over shoulder in right hand, and shield with horseman motif on left arm / VICTORIA | AVCVSTORVN E, CONOB (monogram?) in exergue, winged victory left holding long cross, a star in the left field. Highly lustrous and beautifully struck, this enigmatic piece is initially difficult to categorize, as it is unlisted in any reference to which we have access with the reverse legend as it is written. Stylistically, there are a number of other Solidi attributed to Clovis with remarkably similar obverse dies, particularly with the retrograde "C" at the beginning of the legend. Additionally, the reverse depiction of Victory is not entirely unusual, although the legend is seemingly without precedent until one looks at other denominations issued under Clovis, where we find a number of Tremisses with nearly the exact reverse legend (cf. MEC I-351 for an example). Our assumption is simply that the die cutter had just finished a group of reverse dies for Tremisses and transposed the legends from those onto a Solidus die without paying much attention to his error. Ces tremissis peuvent être attribués à Ebroïn, maire du Palais de Neustrie assassiné début 680. La dernière étude sur ce type est récente : Arent POL et Pierre CRINON, Reprise du type d'Éloi à Moussy (Seine-et-Marne) au nom du monétaire Wandelegiselo, RN, 2016. Schiesser sont du même type que les revers des deniers correspondants (avec CARO/LVS en deux lignes au droit). "MEROVINGIENS, AR denier, début du 8e s., Quentovic (?). Série G. D/ B. diad. à d. Devant, une croix. R/ Etendard avec quatre croisettes disposées autour d''un annelet pointé. S. 800; N. 43; Metcalf, Sceattas, 267-268. 0,76g. Très Beau Very Fine Ce type a longtemps été considéré comme un sceat anglo-saxon, mais son origine continentale ne fait pas de doute. Plusieurs exemplaires ayant été trouvés dans les fouilles de l'abbaye de Corbie ainsi qu'à Thérouanne et Etaples, Metcalf proposa de l'attribuer à l'atelier de Quentovic (Wiccus), le principal port de commerce du royaume franc avec l'Angleterre. C'était aussi le principal atelier monétaire de la région, dont l'activité est attestée de 580 à 675 environ par l'émission de nombreux tremisses en or. L'atelier était encore florissant dans la 1e moitié du 9e siècle; il est donc logique qu'un monnayage d'argent y ait été frappé à partir de la fin du 7e siècle, après la fin du monnayage d'or."

Très Beau Very Fine Les oboles de Charlemagne frappées à Melle ont fait l'objet d'une publication par P. Schiesser qui a répertorié 21 exemplaires au total, de 4 types différents. Ces oboles sont unifaces et ont l'aspect de bractéates en raison de leur faible épaisseur. Leur module est en effet proche de celui du denier. Elles ont été longtemps considérées comme des types de transition entre le monnayage mérovingien et le monnayage carolingien mais leur attribution à Charlemagne est certaine car les 4 groupes d'oboles identifiés par P. Schiesser sont du même type que les revers des deniers correspondants (avec CARO/LVS en deux lignes au droit). Cet exemplaire apparemment unique présente un ornement central en forme de molette qui n'apparaît que sur les deniers du type B. Il a donc été frappé avec un coin de denier."

Unpublished in the standard references. VF, dark, rough surfaces. An enigmatic issue, this coin may also be an unrecorded sceat, due to its lower weight and fabric (although northern Merovingian types like this are known (see OdV&K for other issues). This coin was most likely struck along the Channel, where there was a flow of Continental types to Britain and Frisia where they were imitated."
