Juni 2010, Nr. 160. Exemplar der Auktion Dürr/Michel, Genf 8. November 1999, Nr. 313. Vorlage für das vorliegende Stück bildet ein ab 507 geprägter Solidus des Anastasius I. (Hahn, MIBE 7, zur Datierung siehe MIBE S. 25). Die Zuweisung dieses Stückes an das Tolosanische Reich der Westgoten (z. B. Auktionen Dürr/Michel und Crinon) muß daher korrigiert werden. Das Stück ist nach dem Sieg der Franken über die Westgoten in der Schlacht von Vouillé im Jahr 507 geprägt worden und kann somit nur eine gallische Prägung der Franken sein. Die Fundevidenz spricht eher für ein fränkisches Gepräge. Laut Dr. Curti befindet sich im Viviers Hoard ein Stück mit stempelgleichem Revers, aber im Namen des Justinus, der ebenfalls auf eine fränkische Prägung nach dem Jahr 507 hindeutet. ------ The template for the piece at hand is a Solidus of Anastasius I minted beginning in 507 (Hahn, MIBE 7, for dating see MIBE S. 25). The attribution of this piece to the Visigothic Kingdom of Toulouse (e.g. auctions Dürr/Michel and Crinon) must therefore be corrected. The piece was coined after the victory of the Franks over the Visigoths in the battle of Vouillé in the year 507 and can thus only be a Gallic coinage of the Franks The evidence from the find tends to indicate a Frankish minting. And so the existence in the Viviers hoard of a specimen from the same reverse die, but in the name of Justinus, strongly means an coinage after the year 507.

Victory standing l., holding long jewelled cross; in r field, star, and in exergue, CONOB. Belfort 5027. Lacam . MEC I, 343. Very rare. Virtually as struck and almost Fdc Ex Sternberg XIX, 1987, 1139, and M. Dürr - R. Michel 8 November 1999, Lacam, 256 sales. This coin is most probably a Merovingian imitation of a Byzantine solidus in the name of Anastasius. This attribution is based on the analysis of the style of both the bust on the obverse and the Victory on the reverse, other than the epigraphy of the legends.)

Rev. + VICTORI A AVCCCA Victory standing l., holding long jewelled cross; in r. field, star, and in exergue, CONOD. Belfort 5035 var. (no cross at the beginning of the legend on reverse). MEC I, 343 var. (probably no cross at the beginning of the legend on reverse). An apparently unrecorded variety of a very rare type. Very fine Ex Leu sale 86, 2003, 1069. This specimen was struck under Clovis or his son Theoderic I. Clovis became king at the age of 15 after the death of his father Childeric. Soon he took most of north Gaul by 486 and he maintained good relations with the non-Frankish inhabitants and with the Catholic bishops. He married the Burgundian Clotida in 493 and was converted to Catholicism. After the victory against the Alemanni and the Visigoths, he expanded his reign to Spain. To keep his throne, he killed all the other minor Frankish kings of the Merovingian line. With his death, the kingdom was divided between his sons, giving cause to prolonged wars for reuniting it. This seems to be an unpublished variety for the presence of the cross at the beginning of the reverse legend.)

Grierson estime qu'il s'agit pour la plupart d'émissions du royaume des Francs, hormis deux imitations ostrogothes et quelques pièces burgondes de Gondebaud et Sigismond (M.E.C.
