(MEROWINGER PRÄGUNGEN MIT MEROWINGISCHEN MONETARNAMEN PALATIVM (Palastmünzstätte / Paris?) Triens (vor 641), Paris. Münzmeister Eligius. 1,24 g. PARISI - SIS CIVI Brustbild r.//ELIGIV - SMVN Kreuz über Omega. Belfort 3342. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Wahrscheinlich 2. bekanntes Exemplar. ------ The Monetar ELIGIVS named on this type is almost certainly Eligius, patron saint of the goldsmiths and moneyers, active at the courts of Kings Chlothar II (584-628) and Dagobert (628-639) and later sainted. The Paris coins were probably minted before his appointment as Bishop of Noyon in the year 641.)

Childerich II. (662-675))

St. Eligius (circa 588-1 December 660), who is the patron saint, among other things, of goldsmiths and coin collectors, was a counselor to several Merovingian kings. Born into an influential Gallo-Roman family, he was apprenticed to a goldsmith. Later he was employed by the royal treasurer of the Kingdom of Neustria, there being commissioned by the king, Clotaire II, to fashion a golden throne. Because of Eligius' scrupulous honesty, Clothaire, as King of the Franks, appointed him master of the mint at Marseilles. During this same time, Eligius also did goldwork in Paris, increasing his reputation not only for his skill, but also his honesty, Following Clothaire's death, his son and successor,Dagobert I, appointed Eligius as a chief counselor. Following Dagobert's death in 639 and the regency of his successor, Clovis II, who was then only a child of five, Eligius continued to serve in the government of the new king's mother, Nanthild. However, Eligius' reputation got him appointed bishop of Noyon-Tournai in 642. This diocese also included Ghent and Kortrijk in Flanders. Since most of the inhabitants were pagans, Eligius spent his remaining years in the area, undertaking their conversion, as well as that of the Frisians and Suevi. He died in 660.)

Near EF, light toning in devices, traces of earthen deposits, a couple of hairline flan cracks. Extremely rare royal issue. Clothaire III has the historical distinction of being the first of the rois fainéants , or 'do-nothing kings,' of the Merovingian Dynasty. Although this may be true of his final years, the earlier part of his reign was quite busy, although Clothaire relied on both his mother and trusted advisors to rule on his behalf. The son of Clovis II, Clothaire succeeded his father while still a child. Consequently, a regency formed under his mother, Balthild. Subsequently, Clothaire's chief advisor and defacto ruler, Erchinoald, mayor of the palace. Upon Erchinoald's death, the Frankish nobles chose Ebroin, a man who proved himself to be a violent despot. Although Clothaire tried to exert some real authority when achieved adulthood in 669, it was too little. His premature death in the spring of 673 only worsened the situation.)
